Exercise 5: Read the passage, and then choose the best answer A, B or C.
People used to donate their time to support and help their community. The Swiss Ministry of Health created
an assistance programme named “Time Bank”. Thanks to technology, Swiss citizens can save their time and
put it in banks to use later. People volunteer to look after the elderly who require help and assistance and the
information about the number of hours they spend caring for others is saved in their accounts. When the
volunteer reaches the age when he or she needs help and support, he or she can use the “Time Bank”. This
time, another young volunteer will come to look after them. A time bank is used to record the amount of time
spent providing the service. This service could include IT services, babysitting, hairdressing, gardening,
nursing, tutoring, or any other time-consuming job.
Other countries have begun to apply this system apart from Switzerland. The UK has adopted the “time bank”
plan, and Singapore is considering it.
